He showed up when he said he was gonna show up, he and his crew worked hard and fast, the craftsmanship exceeded my expectations, and the project came in at budget. Juan's team tackled a fairly large job of regrading and creating a drainage system in my backyard, laid custom concrete pavers, re-did our parking pad, rebuilt our deck, and built a fence. If you don’t use AGS Hardscapes for your yard project, it will be your loss! We discussed our project with a range of potential contractors before deciding to go with Juan Martinez at AGS. Most other contractors we spoke with were more intent on pushing what they thought should be done, rather than genuinely listening to & understanding what it was that we were looking to achieve. Juan not only listened to what we wanted, but helped us to better dimension what would be involved & to visualize our concepts in the drawings he put together & amended as our collective ideas crystallized. Over a period of about 6 weeks, we were able to be involved as much or as little as we wanted, but Juan always sought our OK as key milestones or decision points were reached. He & his entire team are very professional, knowledgeable & courteous. They were easy to work with & consistently put in some fairly long hours, regardless what day of the week it was … unless the weather had other ideas that is! In addition to hardscaping, they also helped us move some sizable shrubs & other plants along the way & laid 1,500 sq.ft of sod that we had delivered. After about 30 tons of rock, a strong focus on ensuring there was proper drainage & a few adjustments to different things along the way, AGS Hardscapes helped transform our sloping front & rear yards, where moss & weeds pretty much dominated previously, into usable areas of level yard space that are a pleasure to spend time in now as we set about adding the finishing touches. The retaining walls, steps, pathways & other features that Juan & his team installed, all add considerable functionality & increased curb appeal, not to mention the completely unique character that only natural stone provides. Juan and his workers were punctual and arrived on the scheduled date. The bricks on my carport were old, commercial bricks and could not be simply replaced. Instead he had to use the old bricks, which he had to carefully remove the old bricks, clean them, and then reinstall them. Lucky for me that I discovered Juan / AGS Hardscapes when driving past a remarkable project they were working on in my neighborhood. Juan’s proposal was significantly more linear feet of dry stack stone boulder wall at a significantly lower price than another company. I was so pleased with phase 1 that I immediately moved on to phase 2: demolition of a 5’ tall rock/mortar fire pit ‘thing’ that I had filled with rock debris and repurposing that material to modify an existing retaining wall. An outcome of that was expanding access at the back side of my house from 2’ to 10’ (now allowing a bobcat to reach my back yard). From there: a dry stack stone boulder retaining wall with steps to make the area below my deck flat; a 6’ retaining wall (modular anchor block) at the front edge of my house; 17 crab orchard flagstone steps along the sloped side of my house with a landing / steps at the base fabricated from existing cinder blocks that I wanted to discard (watching the skilled masons craft that from ‘debris’ and apply stucco was fascinating); a landing / planter bed from flagstone rubble at the top of the steps; small boulder edging at property line for a garden bed; massive tree stump extraction. Juan is a talented / creative artist. He provided detailed digital sketches (files) updated at each phase (example attached). My assessment of AGS Hardscapes: Honest | Fair | Affordable | Reliable | Hardworking | Skilled. I also learned a lot from watching and can do more projects on my own now. My front yard was an embarrassing eyesore (a spongy sloping mess of weeds). It is now stunning, and I am so inspired / energized to work on my new ‘foodscaping’ project. Without any reservations at all I will say that Juan and his loyal crews are undoubtedly the best in the business. I have had a lot of masonry done on my homes in the past and used a few different companies getting different levels of results. However once I found Juan and AGS Hardscapes I have not even considered getting further bids from other companies as I have continued to think up new projects to have done. Juan takes an incredible amount of time to be sure that your end result will be just as you imagined or as in my case, always better than imagined. At my current home I first hired Juan to build a complete wood burning masonry fireplace from real stone Cut thin so that the apearence is heavy but the actual result is capable of sitting on a reinforced second floor; He did an amazing job that becameand the fireplace became the focal point of a family room addition. From there his crew repaired; and in two cases, cut out and replaced both interior and exterior masonry staircases and steps so that they would meet modern code standards. His crew used a special two part masonry product to preserve one of my exterior poured staircases that were grandfathered in and could not be demoed and rebuilt. 4 years later they still all look like new. His crew built an extension of a granite and brick wall that looks like it was an original part of my 1953 home. They did this by “harvesting” the granite that was partially buried around my yard apparently left from the original build, and forming it into useable “wall block” type pieces and then matching the grout color and the raised grout style. Amazing attention to details like this make the results seamless to the existing structure. As an “on-going project” Juan and his crews have spent many weekends patiently helping me to design and install an elaborate hardscape yard including stone and stone gardens wrapping completely around my home, terracing my yard, and installing several tractor trailers full of rocks and boulders. Again the results are amazing thanks to Juan meeting me many times at the stone yard to look at and choose boulders, gravel, etc. that work together as well as by taking the time to position each one just right so as to look natural. A true testimate to Juan’s professional attitude and creative skills is that his crew members are a group of loyal workers that share his love for “everything rock”. Over the years I have had the joy of getting to know several of these guys and they are extremely loyal to Juan and his vision. These aren’t just guys that are picked up for a day of labor.
